Hongqi's V12 story: documented HQE milestones and L5 specifications
FAW's records support a clear account of Hongqi V12 development and a specific 6.0-litre L5 specification. They do not justify an unqualified claim that one Hongqi was China's “sole V12 car.” An exclusivity claim needs a defined date, category and survey of alternatives. The more useful starting point is what the manufacturer actually documents.

A cylinder-layout schematic based on the published L5 description, not an authentic cutaway of FAW's engine. Numbers 1–6 count the cylinders in each bank; they are not factory cylinder numbers or a firing order. Internal crankshaft and valvetrain details are not depicted.
Three different milestones
FAW's Chinese-language research-and-development history dates the successful firing of the CA12GV V12 to 22 February 2008. It also records a January 2011 award associated with the HQE inspection vehicle and V12 gasoline-engine development project. These are development-history statements, not retail launch dates. FAW's corporate timeline separately identifies an HQE limousine at the 1 October 2009 parade. That establishes a named vehicle appearance and date. It does not supply every technical detail of the parade car. FAW, History, 1 October 2009 entry
Finally, the manufacturer's L5 product page gives a defined specification. Keeping these records separate avoids silently transferring an engine code or output figure from one model or development stage to another.
What FAW lists for the L5
| Item | Specification on the cited FAW page |
|---|---|
| Engine label | 60N (V12) |
| Displacement | 6.0 litres |
| Rated power | 300 kW at 5,600 rpm |
| Maximum torque | 550 Nm at 4,000 rpm |
| Bank angle in the description | 60 degrees |
| Valves per cylinder | Four |
These values describe the L5 shown on that page; they are not presented as the specification of every Hongqi carrying an L-series name. The product page is an undated manufacturer reference, so it is not used here to assert present-day availability. FAW, Hongqi L5, engine description and specification table
How to read the engine numbers
V12 describes a twelve-cylinder arrangement with two banks. It does not tell you whether an engine is turbocharged, its valve timing or the details of its crankshaft. Those need separate documentation.
Similarly, rated power and maximum torque are quoted at different engine speeds in FAW's table. It would be incorrect to combine the torque value at 4,000 rpm with the power rating at 5,600 rpm as though both were one operating point. The table is a set of stated ratings, not a complete torque curve.
The four-valves-per-cylinder description also does not establish camshaft count or actuation details. Our F-head valve-layout article illustrates why valve location and the mechanism operating it should be described separately.
A better historical description
Use the dated development event for the engine programme, the dated parade record for the HQE appearance and the model-specific table for the L5 specification. That produces a traceable account without stretching “developed,” “appeared” and “sold” into the same claim. It also leaves room for future historical evidence without making the article depend on an unsupported “only” or “first.”
